Your John Deere tractor vehicle identification number is also known as a product identification number, serial number or lawn mower identification number. These 13 to 17 letters and numbers can provide important information about your tractor, such as the year it was made, where the engine was manufactured, its emission levels, its security code and its transmission designation. In addition, each serial number is unique to a specific mower, and can be used to track and identify your machine.
Locate the VIN according to your specific John Deere tractor. For John Deere steel-deck walk-behind mowers, stand behind the mower and locate the VIN on the left side of the mower deck. For John Deere 100 Series tractors, stand behind the tractor and locate the VIN on the frame near the back left wheel. For John Deere zero-turn mowers, face the back of the mower, lift the seat and locate the VIN at the top of the frame on the right side. All VINs are on a sticker that states 'Manufactured by John Deere.' Most VINs will be either 13 or 17 letters or numbers, but units built in the '60s and '70s may only have five or six letters or numbers.
Identify the first two letters or numbers in a 13-symbol VIN or the first three letters or numbers in a 17-symbol VIN; this is the factory code (also known as engine manufacturer). For instance, in the John Deere VIN CD6068G123456, CD is the factory code, and mowers with the factory code CD were manufactured Saran, France.
Identify the next four letters and numbers after the factory code, which will be positions three to six in a 13-symbol VIN, or positions four to seven in a 17-symbol VIN. This is the model number. For instance, in the John Deere VIN CD6068G123456, 6068 is the model number.
Identify the letter in position seven in a 13-symbol VIN. This is the emissions level designation. In order of least to highest emissions, B means the mower is non-emissions certified; C means it's a Tier 1; G is Tier 2 and L is Tier 3. For instance, in the John Deere VIN CD6068G123456, G indicates a Tier 2 emissions level. VINs with 17 letters and numbers do not have an emissions level designation.
Identify the last six letters and numbers in a 13-symbol VIN or the last five digits in a 17-symbol VIN. This is the serial number and is unique to your specific tractor. The serial number can be used to track and identify individual John Deere tractors.
Identify the letter and numbers in positions nine through 12 in a 17-symbol VIN. In order, these identify the security code, calender year of manufacture, transmission code, and wheel or track designation. The calender year of manufacture will be denoted by an A for 2010, B for 2011 and so on. The transmission code will be denoted with an A, C, D, E, H, P or R. The wheel or track designation will denote a 0 for wheel or a 9 for track. VINs with 13 letters and numbers do not include this information.
Tip
For information regarding older John Deere tractors with codes that have five or six numbers and letters, visit your local John Deere dealership or contact John Deere through its online customer service form.
Interpretations of the transmission code of a 17-symbol John Deere VIN is:
A = AutoQuad with left-hand reverser C = CommandQuad D = IVT E = Scraper tractor configuration H = PowrQuad or Manual Shift transmission P = PowerShift transmission R = PowrQuad with left-hand reverser
